HIGH school pupils of Mdantsane gathered at the Indoor Sports Centre recently for the Mr and Miss Mdantsane 2018 beauty pageant.
Event manager, Siyasanga Zwakala, said the pageant started in 2009, the year in which when he won the title. He took over hosting the event in 2011.
“We had 70 contestants from various schools with about 1500 people supporting the pageant.
“A parent also sent me a message on Facebook, thanking me for the opportunity I had given her son and the other young people of Mdantsane. This is one of the reasons why I do what I do – to develop the youth,” Zwakala said.
Local artists also showed off their talents in dance, music, poetry and fashion.
Sakhisizwe Senior High School pupil Sinesipho Melani, 17, was crowned as Miss Mdantsane High School 2018 and Mzomhle High School pupil, Milisa Maliwa, 17, as Mr Mdantsane High School 2018.
“I am overwhelmed at winning, the pageant, but I did make sure that I impressed the judges,” Sinesipho said.
Sinesipho said she believed she won the contest because of how she had presented herself on the runway and how she had answered the judges’ questions.
Her main support base had been her mother and her aunt.
“I would make time to practise at home after school, to polish my grammar and how I walk.”
The winners received prizes valued at about R3000.
Zwakala thankeds the community members of Mdantsane community for supporting the event.
