The Merrifield College boys A tennis team have again proved themselves triumphant at the national Sun City Private Schools Tennis Tournament, held from on August 27 to 31, winning top honours in the A section of the tournament.

This is not the first time Merrifield College has punched above its weight. The overall tournament title has been won by Merrifield boys tennis teams twice previously. This year, Merrifield took three College teams up: the boys A team, boys B team and a girls team.

The boys A team – made up of Joseph Townes, Dylan Smith, Peter Townes, Keelan Hartley and Alex Murray – beat St John’s College 6-1; beat King Edward School 4-3; beat St David’s 5-2; and beat Michaelhouse 6-1 to win the tournament.

Special mention must be made of grade 8 pupil Joseph Townes, who was ranked second in the tournament in his section.

“The A team boys had a great tournament and got the job done by winning the tournament on the Thursday, with the final matches taking place on Friday being irrelevant due to the points lead we had,” said Merrifield College sports co-ordinator Andre Ddu Toit.

“The B team boys finished fifth out of eight teams and it was a great learning experience for them. For all the B team boys it was the first time at the tournament and their a first time playing tournament tennis.”

Merrifield College teacher Gardie Newman, who managed and supported the girls team in their debut at the tournament, said the experience had been wonderful for the players. athletes.

“The spirit has been great and we have seen growth in all aspects,” Newman said.

“This year, having three teams representing the school was a good change for us,” Du Toit said.

“Usually during our matches it’s ‘us vs our opponents and their supporters’.

“This year we also had our other teams supporting us during our matches.”
