It’s difficult to believe that this magnificent old home, once stood high on the east bank of the Buffalo Harbour, East London. The grounds included lawn tennis courts and a small bowling green. It was the focal point of Victoriana and sumptuous entertainment.
Constructed in circa 1850, (the details have remained unclear) for John Bailie, the harbour engineer, who was one of the original 1820 settlers.
The Bailie family, who landed in Port Elizabeth in 1820, seemed to have led a gypsy-type life with many changes, i.e. Grahamstown to East London to Natal.
