Youth drive hosts tournament

Mdantsane youth organisation Manyano Youth Development Drive had its first U13 Spring Cup rugby tournament  on Saturday at the NU 1 Mdantstane rugby fields.

Tournament convenor Siphumle Bangani said the main aim of the initiative was to keep children occupied with sport during the school holidays and weekends.

“We want to prevent the youth from turning to substance abuse or criminal activities. We are grooming them for a better tomorrow, so that one day they can be sport professionals, sport personalities and role models to others,” said Bangani.

He said the drive was established in 2016 and mainly focuses on developing the sports skills of the youth in the . It currently focuses on the following codes: rugby, netball, soccer and boxing.

Five teams took part in the tournament on Saturday with games being played on a points-based system.

The Manyano team consisted of school pupils from nearby primary schools Nkululeko Junior Primary, Mzimkulu Primary School and Bulumko Junior Primary School.

“We go to these schools to scout for promising rugby players for the and then we form a team,”  Bangani said.

The Manyano Youth Development were crowned the champions of the tournament and received a trophy and gold medals.
