Youngsters go all out at rugby tourney

Local rugby tournament Mdantsane Rugby Development Tournament took place last on Saturday October 06 at the NU1 Mdantsane rugby fields, with 10 ten teams competing.

Event organiser Xhanti Msauli said the age groups that participated were U13, U14, U15, U16 and U19.

“We noticed in the past few year there’s been a high rate of teenage pregnancy, high school drop-outs, alcohol and drug abuse. So we decided to stand up and do something for our community.”

The Go! & Express reported (“Mzomhle coaching pays off”, September 13) that Msauli, who is also a rugby coach at Mzomhle Secondary School, started the development programme in 2015 with the aim of reviving rugby interest in rugby in Mdantsane.

“We work tirelessly on forging relationships with the more organised schools for development and exposure of talent in previously disadvantaged areas,” Msauli said.

The results were as follows: Manyano U13b beat Keiskammahoek 25-20, while Manyano U13 first team lost against Keiskammahoek 5-10. In the U14 group, Hurricanes won against Keiskammahoek 15-0.

In the U15 group, Young Bears drew 5-5 against Hurricanes. five all. In the U16 group, Red Stars Rugby Football Club defeated Hurricanes 19-0 and in the U19 group, Mzantsi Rugby Football Club lost against St Matthews RFC 7-5, while St Matthews suffered a 7-0 loss against Hurricanes. 7-0.

The Hurricanes were on a winning spree, as they claimed another 18-5 victory against Mzantsi Rugby Football Club.
