Mzomhle Senior Secondary School rugby coach, Xhanti Msauli decided to established a rugby development programme in 2015 aimed at reviving interest in rugby in Mdantsane.
The school is known for producing some of the best school rugby players in the township.
“In 2015, 2016 and 2017, the school had outstanding seasons which saw them rank as Mdantsane U15 Cchampions, U17 MEC bronze medalists, Love Life 7s Tournament champs and Regional 7’s semifinalists,” said Msauli.
“Teachers no longer have enough time to train or coach these pupils in schools, as they are too involved in preparing classes. So I have made it my mission a point to train them on their behalf.”

The programme has U14, U15, U16, and U19 teams which consist of children from Mdantsane, Nxarhuni and the surrounding areas.
“We need assistance with rugby balls, kit bags and training equipment as the school has been playing with the same old rugby jerseys since 2008.
“We train at the NU1 Rugby Stadium on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3.30pm to 5pm.”
Msauli said the organisation works tirelessly on forging relationships with the more organised schools for development and exposure of talent in previously disadvantaged areas.
“Our good work and dedication has paid off, as Mzomhle was crowned champion this year at the MEC Rugby Tournament for Mdantsane Sschools.”
