The Mongezi Mali U13 baseball tournament took place last week with six schools competing against each other at NU13 Sakhile Senior Primary School in Mdantsane.

Tournament convenor and coach of the Eagles team coach Lwazi Mlondolozi said the tournament was named after Mali, who was one of an East London the baseball players in East London who paved a away for youth to fall in love with the sport.

“Mali was one of our baseball players who passed on in the early 2000s. He was our first loss and the tournament was named after him.

“I then suggested in 2017 that we name it All Stars Baseball Tournament which accommodates everyone who has passed on as we won’t be able to keep up with the names of each person we have lost,” said Mlondolozi said.

The schools that participated were Sakhile Senior Primary School, Nkululeko Senior Primary School, Lukhanyo Lower Primary School, Ncotsheni Senior Primary School, Siyavuya Senior Primary School and Mbekweni Senior Primary School.

“We focused on one age group, the under 13s, because we are trying to prepare teams for a national tournament next year in Port Elizabeth,” Mlondolozi said.

“Our next tournament will be on November 2, catering for under 10s.

“We will also be preparing a team for next year and focusing on other age groups who will be partnering with Mandela Bay.”
