Summer Games heat is on

The annual SA National School Sport Championships are under way in Johannesburg and will run until Friday.

Also known as the Summer Games, the Eastern Cape provincial team is made up of over more than 600 athletes from all districts in the province.

Athletes are competing in sporting codes such as gymnastics, swimming, volleyball, table tennis, basketball, cricket, rugby and football.

Department of sport, arts, recreation & and culture communications manager Andile Nduna said the aim of the games was to grow the talent pool of athletes so they had the chance to join national teams.

“The games also increase the opportunity for pupils learners from all schools to participate in organised sporting events,” Nduna said.

Athletes are selected from inter-school competitions right through to provincial level. The provincial team came in fourth place overall in 2017.

According to Nduna said the under-14 boys cricket team had won three games since the games started, beating Northern Cape, Free State and Mpumalanga.
