Last weekend, East London played host to the Schools Water Polo South Africa (SWPSA) National Tournament which saw teams from all over South Africa as well as Zimbabwe arriving to compete.

According to SWPSA chairman Richard Irvine, this year was the largest tournament to date, with 124 teams and nearly 1,600 players taking part.

Both boy and girl teams from U13 up to U19 were involved.

“Not only does this tournament promote great fellowship and camaraderie between the competing teams, it is also the perfect forum to identify future talent and, in so doing, support the growth and development of water polo in our wonderful country,” Irving said.

As part of the tournament, players in the U14, U15, and U16 teams were identified for inclusion in international tournaments in 2019. The U14 and U15 boys and girls selected will go on to compete at the CANA Zone IV in Windhoek in February while the U16 boys and girls selected will compete at the EU Nations Tournament in the Czech Republic in April and March respectively.

“Sport in its true essence is a unifying experience accomplished through great team work, great leadership and, more importantly, through play. Through this platform, we hope to inspire youth to realise their full potential,” Irving said.
