Mdantsane FM radio presenter Vusumzi “Mavusana” Mbambo recently bagged a nomination for Best Radio DJ at the Amagugu Music Awards.
Mbambo has been a radio presenter for 11 years – and has been with Mdantsane FM for seven years.
“I was born and bred in Mdantsane with a family of four siblings, me being the third. I attended Simnikiwe High School and my favourite sport was rugby.
“I came across radio presenting by chance when I was 28 years old and fell in love with it,” he said.
Mbambo describes himself as a very social person. He loves interacting with different types of people from all walks of life, which inspired him to pursue radio broadcasting as a career.
“I was first doing the drive time show called The Simunye Drive from 3pm to 6pm, but recently moved to a Saturday night show called Washumkhukhu from 7pm to 10pm.
“When I first found out about the nomination, I was happy, but sceptical at the same time.
“I think Amagugu Music Awards recognised me because of my passion for my career and my past accomplishments,” Mbambo said.
Mbambo said he had already won two awards for best radio personality, one at the Eastern Cape Music Awards and another at the Beat Magazine Awards.
“There are so many challenges I have encountered throughout my career but I like challenges because they only make me stronger and more determined to chase after my dreams.”
He said Mdantsane FM was different from other community radio stations in terms of programming, music and presenters.
“A lot of the time we are told by listeners that it’s like they are listening to a commercial radio station where the standard and quality is high.
“I get my content by looking at what’s going on around us here in South Africa and use that so that I can be relevant”, said Mbambo.
The finalists’ announcement will be on June 22 . The date and venue of the ceremony will be announced on the same day.
