
Mdantsane-born Kamvelihe “Kay Lani” Kalani, 20, is a passionate radio broadcasting presenter who strongly believes in having empathy for others.
Kalani is one of the founders of a the charity foundation called Dream Alive Youth Foundation which he established during his first year in at university.
The GO! reported (“Dream Alive Foundation to empower youth”, June 28, 2018) that the charity foundation was established in April last year 2018 by East London and King William’s Town students with the aim of bringing change in the lives of the poor while also tackling the socio-economic challenges in the communities.
Kalani is currently doing his second year at Walter Sisulu University (WSU), and his studying towards a Nnational Ddiploma in Ppublic Rrelations Mmanagement.
Kalani has worked at various community radio stations over the past four years.
His career started at Mdantsane FM where he shadowed in a youth talk show which he later co-hosted with Anita Rula.
He later joined the news department as an English and IsiXhosa news reader.
“In 2017, I joined another community radio station, Kumkani FM, where I was headhunted to do an international charts programme on weekends. This is where I had the an opportunity to host my own show and learnt a lot about the world of radio.
“In the same year, I was elected as the WSU Buffalo City Campus public relations officer for a global organisation, known as Enactus.
“The aim of this organisation is to help community members with getting funding for their businesses,” he said.
In 2018, Last year Kalani joined Link FM which is where he is currently working. He is a host of a youth talk show Kconnexion Youthology which airs every Monday from 6pm to 8pm.
He also works as a content film producer for Mdantsane Film Production.
Kalani believes in having a positive good mind-set because it is the internal lense through which one sees and navigates life.
“I have recently started giving doing motivational talks after I was invited to speak at the Reeston Youth Development Programme.
“Ever since that day, I’ve been reassured that motivating and inspiring young people is my love and passion.
“My motto is my favourite Bible scripture taken from Philippians 4:13: ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’.”
