Heritage Month was closed off with the inaugural Under 17 rugby tournament hosted by Leo Mbini Rugby Development in Berlin.

Seven teams from across the country took part.

The final was a teeth- clenching match which ended with Reed Stars being crowned champions after defeating rival team Hurricanes 19-3.

“It was a successful tournament though whereas it was organised in a short space of time.

“I decided to host the tournament as we all wanted the kids to play more tan anything,” said Convener Leo Mbini said he decided to host the tournament as the organisers wanted to give the young players the chance to play.

He said the development tournament needed the support of the department of sport, recreation, arts & culture.

“This year we had no funding but we would like to have some prizes for the participants because as much as this is a development tournament.

“We would love to have something to motivate the players, something they can remember and something that will encourage them to play sport.

“We will be having more teams [in future tournaments] as I had a lot of calls from different areas wanting me to organise this early next year so that those who could did not make it get enough time to prepare for next time for tournament”, said Mbini said
