This week’s entry in our month-long horror series really puts the cosmic into “cosmic horror”.
Event Horizon stars Laurence Fishburne and the king of cosmic horror himself Sam Neill as leaders of a space crew sent to investigate the sudden reappearance of an experimental ship, the titular Event Horizon.
When they arrive, they find the ship completely deserted but a series of terrifying messages suggests something sinister lurks on board.
As a science-fiction film, Event Horizon is pretty shallow but as a psychological horror, it truly excels. Throughout the film, the characters are all haunted by sinister hallucinations that prey on their guilty memories or weaknesses which makes those scenes all the more terrifying.
Combined with some truly incredible practical effects and set design and Event Horizon emerges as a definite classic.
