Deputy minister of social development Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), last week launched the department’s new Disability Empowerment and Mainstreaming Guidelines.
The new guidelines were part of the department’s celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3.
JICA and the department have entered into a four-year technical partnership to develop “disability empowerment mainstreaming”.
This partnership will help the department provide services to persons with disabilities and improve the overall quality of their lives.
Bogopane-Zulu said that the guidelines are in line with the vision of the National Development Plan (NDP) which aims at combatting poverty and discrimination.
“The purpose of these guidelines is to ensure the promotion of disability mainstreaming and the empowerment of persons with disabilities in line with the White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (WPRPD) as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,” she said in a statement.
