Young East London model Sarah-Jayne Johnson was on top of the world after being crowned Miss Teenager Eastern Cape at the Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg.
“It was quite surprising. I didn’t expect it because there were a lot of very talented girls there,” Johnson said.
The pageant involved a number of steps which tested the participants various modelling skills, starting with a dance.
“Because there were so many of us, we split into three groups and each group did the same dance.”
From there, entrants moved on to traditional wear and the top 30 were chosen, who then modelled in their evening wear. These 30 were then whittled down to the top 10 and finally the top five.
Even with this achievement, Johnson is not resting on her laurels and is already preparing for her next competition, Opulent Models SA which will take place in Pretoria in October.
“Opulent Models is one of the biggest modelling competitions in South Africa,” said mother Melody Johnson.
“From this competition, you can be scouted by international talent agencies so it can set your future if you’re good at modelling.”
While Miss Teenager was more of a pageant, with a focus on charity work and personality, Johnson said Opulent was more focused on the modelling side of things.
Of course, having to travel up to Pretoria not just for the competition itself but for the various training courses beforehand is a pricey endeavour, and so Johnson is hosting a fundraiser to help get her there.
“We’re selling pageant tickets at R100. From that we’re going to do a draw and the winners will get R5,000. Another R5,000 will go to Guardians of Hope,” she said.
