East London’s own “golden girl” Joyce Guggenbichler celebrated her 91st birthday on Friday June 25. Guggenbichler has an interesting story to tell about a certain photograph taken back in 1964.
“On December 16, 1964 – Dingaan’s Day [now Day of Reconciliation] – I was contacted on Leaches Beach by Don Watson of the Daily Dispatch,” she said. Watson, Guggenbichler said, had been visiting all the beaches in EL that day and she was the only person he saw.
He asked if he could photograph her for the paper but she initially declined, saying she wasn’t looking her best.
“He said let him be the judge of that, so I did. I appeared on the front page the next day under the caption ‘GIRL IN GOLD’.”
