Babalwa Nonqonqoto, popularly known in the boxing ring as The Fox, has cemented herself as the Eastern Cape bantamweight champion after her win against Noxolo Makhanovu at the Orient Theatre on Sunday, March 9.
Nonqonqoto also holds the EC junior bantamweight title, which she won in August last year.
“This win makes me very happy. It is proof that the hard work that I have been putting into my training was not in vain.
“Winning this championship means everything because I had won this title before, and then I took a three-year break, so it feels good to win it again.
“I am so grateful to everyone who has helped me and supported me, including my sponsors,” said Nonqonqoto.
The young female boxer has had a spectacular comeback and has made it back into the SA national rankings. She is ranked number two. This is a proud moment for Nonqonqoto as she had to work her way back up the rankings when she returned to boxing last year.
Her manager, Evner Samkelo Williams, says this win means big things for the future of Nonqonqoto’s career.
“After winning the EC junior bantamweight championship, she had been competing in various small fights as she waited for another chance to win back her previous title.
“Now that she has won it, we have no intention of defending. This is all about reviving her career and bringing her back into the boxing world and boxing rankings. We want to conquer SA first before we go international. We will be heading to the African Boxing Union next.”
Nonqonqoto will now await a date to compete for the SA bantamweight championship.
