The ninth annual Inspiration Awards took place in East London on Friday June 9 and Izibalo, a science, technology and mathematics improvement initiative won the main prize worth about R80,000.
The other three finalists won R40,000 each.
The other three finalists in the top four were Sports for Lives, run by Jono Kruger, Future Roses Care Centre, run by Linda Beja and Land of the Living, which is run by Dr Scott Worley.
The Inspiration Awards are aimed at recognising and promoting social activists to tell their stories and share the positive differences that they are able to make in their communities.
Izibalo is a tutoring and teaching programme that focuses on assisting pupils with mathematics, engineering, technology and science-related subjects to help them secure jobs in the future.
Edumisa Mtoli is one of the founders of the organisation and he believes that pupils should make mathematics a priority and stay away from mathematics literacy.
“This achievement means a lot to us as a team. It means that there are people who also believe that in empowering children we are playing a role in solving the problems this country is facing.
“With the winnings we will improve our service and enrol more children to the programme. We think we will be in a position to add up to 15 more children by the end of the year,” Mtoli said.
