Overtakers Athletics Sports Club will be hosting their second annual Women’s Day race event on Wednesday August 9.
The first race attracted more than 200 runners and grew to more than 1,300 runners in 2022.
The race will include distances of 5km, 10km and 21km, starting and finishing at the Beacon Bay Country Club
The aim of the race is to assist in strengthening the fight and promote activism against gender-based violence.
Overtakers Athletics Sports Club chair and founder Templeton Yuba said the race was a celebration of women and aims to put up a fight against GBV.
“The women’s race is aligned with the National Women’s Day and therefore commemorates the day in promoting recognition of their achievements, with regards to divisions whether ethnically, linguistically, economically, socially and politically but attached the runner’s exchange of sweat to uproot GBV perpetrated mainly to women.
“We have partnered with the University of Fort Hare to advance the campaign against GBV and they will be providing a guest speaker.
“They will be managing the water points and providing anti-GBV wrist bands, among other things,” Yoba said.
The running club has been hosting a Women’s Day fun run every year since 2017, with the exception of 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Overtakers Club was registered in 2013 under Border Athletics and Athletics SA and caters for developing runners from all areas and provides support to runners young and old.
While the main activity of the day will be the race, the programme will also include other entertainment activities including music, dancers and stretching exercises.
There will be medals for all those who finish the race in all the categories, and special prizes for the winners of all the different categories.
Online entries close at midnight on August 3, while entries at Sportmans Warehouse are available until August 5.
The race will take place on August 9, with the 21.1km race starting at 6.30am, the 10km at 7am and the 5km beginning at 7.20am.
