GO Review – Barbie

PRETTY IN PINK: Margot Robbie shines as ‘Stereotypical Barbie’ in the live-action ‘Barbie’ movie, now showing at cinemas worldwide. Picture: SUPPLIED

Genre: Adventure, fantasy, comedy

A whimsical and empowering adventure for all ages, complete with every shade of pink imaginable, the Barbie movie has been one of the most anticipated movies of 2023, and it certainly did not disappoint.

Whatever great experience you were expecting from the fascinating mind of director Greta Gerwig, this film exceeds that.

The film follows as “Stereotypical Barbie” (brilliantly played by Margot Robbie) and Ken (played by Ryan Gosling) find themselves traveling to the real word in search of answers after Barbie has an existential crisis that puts the future of Barbieland in jeopardy.

What follows is a beautiful story of self-discovery and realisations for both dolls that the real world is completely different from what they thought it was — and not in a good way.

Gerwig and her team mastered the storytelling and have created a beautiful piece that everyone can relate to.

The ensemble cast is diverse and features all the different versions of Barbie that we have grown to love, including a few discontinued dolls. Robbie deserves all the credit for her portrayal of the well-loved doll.

She perfectly encapsulates the inner turmoil of losing yourself, questioning your purpose and going on that all-important journey of discovery.

The movie deals with issues of feminism and patriarchy in a way that is a clear, albeit unfortunate, reflection of the world we live in. Gloria’s (played by America Ferrera) speech, heralded across the internet, eloquently expresses women’s struggles as daughters, mothers and businesswomen.

The soundtrack strikes a perfect balance between fun dance tracks and emotional ballads. Aqua, the originators of Barbie Girl, collaborate with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice on a remixed version.

While the movie is based on the life of a doll, it carries a PG13 rating given that the plot lines, themes and innuendos are aimed at a mature audience.

Barbie is now showing at the cinema.
