Gladwin turns alcohol addiction into show

Singer and songwriter Jason Gladwin is celebrating the power of recovery with a special intimate show at 2 Twelfth Avenue, Gonubie on Friday February 9.

Gladwin has more than 15 years of experience in the industry and has performed locally and internationally, sharing the stage with Jeremy Loops, Mi Casa and many others.

He has faced trying personal challenges that inspired a powerful body of work he is eager to share with audiences in celebration of the resilience, triumph and hope found in the recovery from addiction.

“It’s the first time in years that I’ve put together a show with solely original songs. It’s also a time for me to be present and enjoy what I’m playing for those attending.

“I battled with a drinking problem for years and am just over one year sober. So shows are a lot more professional now,” Gladwin said.

The name of the show is Bloodclot, which is a reference to Gladwin’s personal journey and getting a second shot at life after his struggle with alcoholism. It is also the name of his new single, to be released in the next few weeks.

Gladwin’s band consists of Sven Raju on bass and keys, Jono Buitendag on drums and violin and John Menton on lead guitar.

“I’m excited and grateful to perform with a live band. It allows me to play the songs as they sound on the album. I’m an extroverted person, so there will be lots of crowd interaction and fun banter,” Gladwin said.

The talented musician admits that it is more emotional for him to sing about his own life experiences as opposed to doing covers of other artists’ music.

“I want audiences to take away a message of hope and the beauty of life slowly being restored and to enjoy the catchy music that I am sure they’ll be humming on the way home.

“You can expect some fun and happy songs as well as some lyrically deep stuff.

“It’s a journey of my life through a set list,” Gladwin said.

Gladwin is on a mission to spread positivity with his music and help others who are stuck in similar positions as he once was.

“I have a really big heart for those battling addiction. I have even studied a bit of addiction counselling but nothing formal, but I have tons of people who will be willing to help for free if they want to reach out.

“If anyone is struggling with a drinking problem, they can contact me and I can get them in contact with the right people for help,” Gladwin said.

Limited tickets for the show are available at R150 by contacting Gladwin directly at 065-673-1789.

Guests are invited to bring their own snacks and drinks and will receive a free album.
