The East London community has been shaken by the recent passing of Sandra-Lee Hensberg on Friday May 10, at the age of 57.

Hensberg was one of the admins and founding members of the popular Facebook group East London Girls, a female-only group where women and girls can seek and receive help with any problem. Her contribution to the group and the East London community through this platform has been immense.

Facebook users have been leaving comments in the group, expressing their sadness over Hensberg’s passing.

One user, Ona Coetser commented; “[Sandra-Lee] Hensberg was a shining star in our community. Her vivacious spirit, loving nature, and kindness touched the hearts of everyone she encountered. Sandra-Lee had a unique ability to make everyone feel special, spreading love and warmth wherever she went.

“Her compassion for the less fortunate was unmatched, and she dedicated her life to making a positive impact on those around her. Her passing is a tremendous loss to us all.”

Much of Hensberg’s life was dedicated to giving back to the community in various ways, and one of the organisations close to her heart was Guardians of Hope, which  provides a place of safety for vulnerable children who have been abandoned.

Guardians of Hope founder Elaine Brenkman said: “She often brought baby jerseys and baby items to Guardians of Hope. What made her donations so special was that she spent time with the babies. It was never just a drop and go. She didn’t just care about me caring for the children, she cared about me as a person, too.”

Her mission to serve others continues after her death as Hensberg was registered as an organ donor, something that is a great need in the country.

Approximately 4,700 people are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant in SA, but only 0,2% are registered organ donors. One organ donor can save up to seven lives and transform more than 50 lives.

In honour of Hensberg’s charitable legacy, members of the East London Girls Facebook group are donating towards Guardians of Hope in their private capacity. To join their efforts, contact Guardians of Hope SA on Facebook or give the home a call on 082-487-4406.
