Spend 12 hours in a kennel for SPCA

In a bid to meet their financial obligations to the animals, Meyers Motors Bazaar has partnered with the SPCA on an exciting fundraising initiative called the East London SPCA Jail and Bail 2023, where people can spend a night in a kennel with only a few privileges available to them.

The aim of the game is for one or two people to spend one night or 12 hours in a dog kennel.

The 24 kennels will be washed, cleaned and sterilised before participants enter them.

According to Margaret Pautz, representative of the ELSPCA, the sanctuary is in need of volunteers and committee members.

“We need members of the public who will be willing to work, assist and mentor management and staff of the SPCA. We also need more sponsoring and donating in the form of money, food, blankets, hosepipes, cleaning materials and  unwanted items to be donated to the charity shop to generate more income.

“The primary goal is to raise funds to keep our SPCA functioning at every level, through educating, looking after the animals in our care, maintenance of facilities, payment of outstanding accounts, payment of rates, electricity and medication,” Pautz said.

Participants are to raise a minimum of R1,000 before Friday November 10, which will allow them to bring a few comforts to their stay.

For a fee, participants will be able to bring in extra goodies like food for R1,000, a blanket for R2,000, some form of a bed for R3,000, a phone or book for R4,000, and even breakfast in the morning for R5,000. All fees paid will go to the SPCA to assist them with the general day-to-day running of the sanctuary.

All participants are required to promote their kennels and raise their own bail money.

Meyers Motors Bazaar manager Craig Rogerson, who will also be spending the night in a kennel, says they are aiming to raise a total of R10,000 with this initiative to assist the SPCA.

“We are aware that the SPCA is in dire need of funding.  It was a quick decision to say yes to this fun initiative. The SPCA does so much for the community of East London, Qonce and surrounds and sometimes works 24-hour workdays.

“I think spending 12 hours in a kennel with some luxuries with the help of my sponsors is a small way to repay them for their efforts. Not only is this fun, but it also gives us an inside into the SPCA’s operations and needs,” Rogerson said.

SPCA Lower South Coast hosted a Jail and Bail initiative two years ago and raised more than R400,000.  For more information, visit the East London SPCA Facebook page.
