Grade 11 Stirling High School pupil Liam Prime is making a difference in his community by spearheading a fundraising drive for DJ Sobey Old Age Home, running 200km and cycling 900km to raise funds to create 72 boxes of toiletries and treats for the elderly.
“Thinking of the elderly that are sometimes placed in homes, with little or nothing, made decide to do something for them this year. I want them to feel that there are people that care for them. Some things we take for granted might be a luxury to others,” Prime said.
The boxes will include soap, a face cloth, toothpaste, a toothbrush, deodorant, Vaseline, and a sweet treat. These items will be placed in shoeboxes, decorated with a motivational message and handed over at the end of August.
Prime will run and cycle indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather, and his progress will be recorded and posted on social media.
Prime has been working with his coach, Eben Hartslief, to monitor his training and monitor his fitness and fatigues levels. He credits his family and friends for their support. His mother, Vanessa, said she was proud of her son and how he was using his talents to give back to his community.
“He has a heart for people. The biggest challenge is finding a balance between school and training,” she said.
DJ Sobey board member John Bennet said Prime’s efforts were commendable.
“We are continually fighting for survival, so any bit of injection assists us. It is amazing that a school-going boy knows what is going on in his community and has decided to help in this way.
“Many of the elderly here have been forgotten, so it is heartwarming that a young person has offered his time and energy to help,” Bennet said.
The public is encouraged to donate items by contacting Vanessa on 078-451-9965.
