A total of 125 pupils participated in the 2024 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists regional science fair last week at Hudson Park.
The high school pupils produced 84 projects, tackling real-world challenges with science solutions.
The selected pupils will attend the National Science Fair in Johannesburg later this year.
Hudson Park High School grade 10 pupil Great Umejesi received the silver award for his project, titled ‘Solution to unequal access to decent quality shoes’, which was also awarded the Eskom Prize for best innovation as part of the event.
He also won a R65,000 Rhodes University scholarship.
Stirling High grade 9 pupil Olivia Smallie also received the silver award for her computer science project, titled ‘Green School’, which addressed complex environmental issues. She also received a R5,000 voucher from RS SA.
Eskom Expo’s Eastern Cape provincial co-ordinator Fredy Mashate said: “We are delighted to report a significant surge in participating schools in the region, testament to the outstanding support we have received from the Eastern Cape department of education.”
Some of the categories included engineering, energy, agricultural sciences, social sciences and environmental.
The winners of best female winner, best energy project and best development project, all received Bluetooth wireless speakers, sponsored by Eskom.
