This week, we speak to local barber David-James Groeneveldt, who is passionate about his craft and providing a professional cutting-edge service to his clients through his business Fades by DJ.
What products/services do you offer?
I am a barber/hairstylist. I offer haircuts and facial grooming, as well as hair styling advice for my clients.
When and how did you start your business?
I started cutting hair as a side hustle in 2019 while I was studying, just for some extra income. Unfortunately, I had to drop out, so I pursued cutting hair as I discovered my passion for it.
Where and how did you learn your barber skills?
I’m a self-taught barber, however, I have used YouTube tutorials and studied industry trends and techniques to further my knowledge and stay up to date with trends.
How many people do you work with?
I currently work by myself, and I am focused on building my brand, and do plan on building a team.
What’s your favourite aspect of being a barber, and what keeps you passionate about your work?
I think being able to connect with people and build friendships through my craft, as well as seeing the confidence and happiness on a client’s face after a fresh haircut. Expressing my art and showcasing my creativity and skills with each cut keeps me passionate about what I do.
Your Fades by DJ Instagram page has videos showcasing your skills. What are some of the benefits of using social media to market your business?
It allows me to showcase my skills through videos and pictures. Clients can see my expertise and step into my shop with confidence in my ability. Social media also acts as a portfolio for potential companies and other brands. It has also helped attract new clients and build a more diverse clientele.
What do you think sets you apart from other similar businesses?
I offer personalised attention. My clients get my full focus. I am very consistent, so clients know every cut is either consistent or better than the previous one. I try make sure I build a one-on-one experience, especially for clients who are introverted and shy.
What are some of the challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?
Some challenges I’ve experienced include building my client base. Being new to this I had to earn the trust of people. When I started, I gave free haircuts in exchange for taking photos and videos to create exposure. I relied on word of mouth as well, putting myself out there and telling people about my business. Marketing the business was a challenge and how I overcame this was by leveraging social media and doing collabs with clients who had a bigger social presence and asking them to share my work.
What proud moments have you celebrated in your business so far?
My proudest moment was transitioning from cutting hair in the backyard of my parents’ house to saving up and building an extension of the house for my Fades by DJ studio workspace.
What are some of your business goals for 2025?
To build a bigger social media presence, working with barber brands. I’d also like to take part in initiatives to give back to the community or teach barbering skills at workshops.
What advice do you have for someone who is interested in a similar line of business?
Stay consistent and keep growing. Absorb as much information as you can, especially from social media, to improve your craft. Be patient, nothing good comes easy or fast, just put the reps in. Market yourself on social media or word of mouth and be confident in what you do. Always seek room for improvement, whether it’s through customer service, your haircuts or video editing. Keep up with the latest trends as well. Budget and handle finances wisely. Believe in yourself!
