Merrifield chess stars shine at Mzanzi Interprovincial Youth Champs

Merrifield Schools’ chess players delivered a stellar performance at the Mzanzi Interprovincial Youth Chess Championships (MYICC) held in Polokwane this December, proudly representing the Eastern Cape and showcasing their dedication and skill on a national stage.

The under-14 team claimed gold medals in both the championship and premier sections, with Leon Fricke, Luhlumile Ndwandwa, and Omeleza Balfour leading the charge. Meanwhile, the under-12 team, comprised of Anochengeta Chinyamurindi, Longezo Ndwandwa and Senogo Maseou, brought home a silver medal in the championship section.

Among the youngest competitors, seven-year-old Vuyanathi Mdaka, representing the under-10 division, demonstrated exceptional potential and made his school proud as Merrifield’s youngest participant.

The remarkable results are a testament to the boys’ unwavering commitment, hours of rigorous training, and the guidance of their dedicated coach throughout the year.

As the MYICC heads to Gqeberha in 2025, Merrifield looks forward to seeing these talented players continue their winning streak and inspire future chess stars.
