Diverse mix of entertainers head to EL for Umtiza Fest

The ninth Umtiza Arts Festival explodes into Buffalo City metro from today until June 5, hosted by the Guild Theatre, East London Museum, and Ann Bryant Art Gallery.

Expect a vibrant mix of theatre, art, walks and talks celebrating creativity.

Opening week highlights:

May 22–25: Kerry Hiles and Misery Loves Company shine at Alexander Playhouse with four shows.

May 23: Amanda Strydom’s State of the Heart cabaret at Guild Theatre, Umtiza Arts Exhibition opening at the Ann Bryant Art Gallery and Amathole Museum in Qonce, for a family market day.

May 24: The Joy of Books Festival and fabulous talks at East London Museum, classical pianist Megan-Geoffrey Prins, isiXhosa drama Buzani Kubawo presented by Sonwa Sakuba, and comedy with JamJam, Carvin H Goldstone, Kagiso KG Mokgadi, and Rob van Vuuren at Guild Theatre. Feya Faku jazzes up Legends Showcase.

May 25 (Africa Day): The day starts off with a free guided walk at Nahoon Point Nature Reserve with Kevin Cole. The Umtiza Arts in the Park with its family-friendly vibe in the breathtaking gardens of the Ann Bryant Art Gallery opens at 10am. Soak in a day filled with live music, delicious food, and carefully curated flea market stalls offering unique treasures.

This is the perfect spot to relax, connect, and revel in the ‘olde world’ charm of East London’s cultural scene. As the sun sets, the festivities move to the Legends Showcase Venue for an Africa-themed night market that pulses with the energy of our vibrant continent. It’s a night to honour our heritage, unite our communities, and dance to the rhythms of Africa under the stars.
