The life of renowned East London businessman, car enthusiast, and beloved family man Riaaz Jogie will be celebrated in grand style at the East London racetrack on Saturday January 25. More than a year after Jogie’s tragic passing in a motorcycle accident, his family and friends are coming together to honour his memory with a motor spinning event hosted by Spin-Cartel .
The event, a tribute to Jogie’s passion for cars and motorsport will feature top spinners from across the country. Renowned car spinner and stunt driver “Kayla” will serve as the event’s MC, alongside motorsports promoter Victor Pardal.
Families are encouraged to attend, with food stalls and jumping castles ensuring fun for all ages. Tickets are available at the gate for R150, with limited pre-sale options.
Jogie, who passed away at the age of 37, was remembered not only as a successful business owner but also as a devoted husband, father of four, and a friend who touched many lives. His brother, Shameer Jogie, said the event would celebrating Riaaz’s legacy and raise funds for his family and charitable causes close to his heart in Duncan Village, Scenery Park and Pefferville.
“Riaaz left a big hole in our hearts and in the community. Hosting this event is our way of keeping his spirit alive while supporting his children and continuing his outreach efforts,” Shameer said.
The family has also expressed frustration over the lack of progress in the investigation into the accident that claimed Jogie’s life. Despite a case of culpable homicide being opened after the incident, the SAPS has stated they are not aware of any ongoing investigation when the GO!&Express requested updates on the case.
At the time of his passing, provincial transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose confirmed that Jogie died on the scene and two other people, a man and woman, sustained injuries.
“It is said that the biker [Jogie] was riding from the Amalinda direction towards the Frere [Hospital] direction when he collided with a vehicle with two occupants — a male and a female,” Binqose said.
“The biker, who was alone, died on the scene and the two occupants of the [vehicle] sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Frere Hospital.” Binqose had said that a case of culpable homicide was opened and investigations to establish the cause of the incident were continuing however since then, the family has been given no updates.
Shameer said: “No progress has been made into Riaaz’s case over a year later despite our numerous attempts as a family to follow up. It’s disheartening to even continue trying because the lack of progress just opens up old wounds.
“We want to know the answers to the cause of the accident but if nothing concrete has been further established then we would rather not revisit it, because its too traumatic for the family to be given incomplete updates on the case.
“His oldest child is only 14 while the youngest is seven. His passing has left a big hole in our hearts as a family and in the community and we would rather focus on celebrating him.”
Jogie’s legacy extends beyond his business, Jogies Q4U and Numberplates, which provided vehicle registration and licensing services. He was a beacon of generosity and kindness, traits highlighted by friends and colleagues. Leroy Reddy, a childhood friend, described Jogie as “a pillar of his family and a role model to many”.
In a statement posted on Facebook last year, his widow Basheera said: “Life will never be the same without you, but I carry you in my heart every day. You were an amazing husband and the best father, and I’ll always remind our children of your unconditional love. I’m grateful for the time we had together and proud to have been your wife. You are deeply missed, and I’ll love you forever.”
