Local comedy powerhouse Virgil Prins is flipping the script on East London’s entertainment scene, offering budding comedians a chance to share their jokes with local audiences every week in partnership with Legends Showcase Venue with the intention to nurture raw talent, refine skills, and give amateurs the courage to own the stage.
With a nod to his own journey, which began on similar open mic stages, Prins is now paying it forward, ensuring the next wave of comedians has the same stepping stone to success.
Prins said: “Open mic comedy nights are the backbone of the comedy industry, the grassroots where good comedians and great jokes are born. I regularly performed at an open mic night called Laugh & Lounge in Vincent Park, hosted by fellow Eastern Cape comedian Mbu Msongelwa.
“That gig was one of the key springboards for my comedy career. Open mic nights have always been a place of growth, experimentation, and connection, and I’m excited to provide that same opportunity for others,” Prins said.
The criteria for the open mic nights are simple.
Comedians are open to prepare all types of comedy, this is to ensure that comedians can freely explore their creativity and unique styles. It is important for all comedians to maintain respect and steer clear of insensitive topics. Comedians are also encouraged to bring at least two audience members.
Prins will not be performing, allowing the eager entertainers to take stage.
“I’ll be taking on the role of host for these nights. As comedians come up to try their jokes, which may or may not land, I’ll ensure the evening flows smoothly and everyone who joins us has a great overall experience.
“My role is to bring a sense of structure and keep the energy alive, using my experience to tie the evening together. As my headmaster at Hudson Park used to say, I’ll make sure the night maintains a ‘sense of decorum’ while keeping it fun and engaging for the audience,” Prins said.
Prins also shared some advice for the comedians as they prepare to take the stage.
“Preparation is key, don’t just get on stage and start rambling. Seasoned comedians may make it look like they’re improvising, but trust me, that’s an illusion. A good comedy routine requires a lot of preparation and thought.
“Once you’re on stage, do your thing. You’ll probably feel nervous, and that’s completely normal. It would be strange if you didn’t. Embrace the nerves, enjoy the experience, and, most importantly, come back and try it again. Your first time won’t be perfect, it never is, but that’s all part of the journey. Comedy is a craft, and every time you step on stage, you get better,” Prins said.
The first show was on Wednesday January 22 and will continue every Wednesday at 8pm. Entry for the show is R50. If you are interested in performing, contact Prins on 078-065-4125.
