Phase FM, a recently launched Mdantsane-based online commercial radio station, has vowed to be a lasting voice for the youth to, not only exercise their freedom of expression but also advance their skills in radio broadcasting and the media industry.
The radio station was launched in 2023 and has since established itself as an innovative platform that provides individuals with a chance to showcase their skills in news, music, community work, and other related skills.
According to programme manager Ziyanda Jebese, Phase FM being based in a township gives it the advantage of adding a local, authentic voice to the highly saturated online radio space.
“What sets Phase FM apart is our unwavering commitment to showcasing diverse voices and stories. Through engaging, we strive to foster a sense of belonging among our listeners. It’s a lifeline for connection and inspiration.
“The station provides a fresh, innovative, and fascinating format of programmes that cater for young and old listeners. Furthermore, the station is formed on six core values, namely quality, respect, integrity, professionalism, compassion, and commitment,” Jebese said.
Within this time, Phase FM has also solidified itself as a beacon of hope for the community through various outreach programmes and skills development programs for the youth.
“The significance of the station is to equip the youth of Mdantsane with radio broadcasting skills and eradicate the high employment youth rate.
“The station recruited unemployed youth who are now working as radio presenters, news readers, sports anchors, and so on. The station also managed to recruit young people who have a wealth of radio broadcasting experience and made them operational managers,” Jebese said.
Presenter Kamvelihle Kalani said: “I have always had a love for radio. My Phase FM journey began after I was discovered on TikTok. They approached me to see if I was interested and I joined the team. Phase FM is great because they decided to create a platform close to home.
“Instead of people having to travel to Johannesburg or Cape Town for their big breaks, they can get those opportunities right here. We broadcast worldwide and this has mean we are not just limited to Mdantsane,” Kalani said.
