Talented Mdantsane-born comedian Mthawelanga ‘Tats’ Nkonzo returns to Legends Showcase on 28 February for his second annual Love is for Dummies show.
This time, he’s partnering with fellow local comedian Virgil Prins for a night dedicated to all forms of love.
Nkonzo first performed his show last year in February and while he was nervous, the show proved to be a success.
“After spending 20 years doing comedy in Johannesburg, I decided to move back and do comedy here. I had to learn about East London and the people and what works and what doesn’t.
“East London has the best audience.
“When I first performed the show, I was scared and nervous and I just wanted people to have a good time. I made the tickets R50 because I just wanted people to come out and have a good time. Now, I am more prepared, and the tickets cost more,” Nkonzo said.
Nkonzo maintains that his brand of comedy is aimed at making uncomfortable conversations easier and funnier.
“I create a space where comedy just works, there will be a bit of tension but it will also have great release. My comedy is enjoyable for everyone, there is no age restriction for my show.
“The show is for everyone who believes in love, and not just romantic love.
“We are going to celebrate all kinds of love,” Nkonzo said.
Prins, who is no stranger to the East London comedy scene, will be sharing the stage with Nkonzo on his special night.
“We will be discussing matters of the heart. The good, the bad, and the unfortunate. This is for the lovers, and the ‘I don’t need a man’ crowd. Oh, and the ‘women are not built for loyalty, they are built for survival’ crowd,” Prins said.
“This show is bigger than laughter. It is a matter of the heart and soul.
“Tats is also bringing his guitar, which is always a spicy affair. He is a seasoned professional, and it is a privilege to be working alongside such a highly established international act,” Prins said.
Prins is also one of three Eastern Cape comedians who have been nominated in various categories for the 2025 Savanna Comics Choice Comedy Awards, alongside Callum Hitchcock (East London) and Khanyisa Jam Jam (Gqeberha). Prins’ highly successful tour ‘Prin Live Comedy Tour’ was nominated for best solo show of the year.
“I feel happy about the nomination. I worked hard in putting together a country wide tour in 2024 and am happy the industry has recognised my efforts. I’m also proud of the show I put together. It is a top quality show and is a must watch.
“The fact that three Eastern Cape comedians have been nominated is a testament to the quality of talent we have in this province. I hope that this is a wake-up call to local audiences, municipality and businesses to support our local artists and comedians, because we are sitting on a hot bed of talent,” Prins said.
Love is for Dummies will take place on Friday February 28 at Legends Showcase Venue in Berea. Tickets are available at 083-408-0246 for R150 general tickets and R270 for the couples’ special.
