Selborne water polo teams shine in tournaments

Selborne College’s water polo teams have been making waves with strong performances at recent tournaments and fixtures.

On February 22, Selborne College traveled to Makhanda for a series of matches against St Andrew’s College and Graeme College. The first team put on a solid performance, defeating St Andrew’s second team 16-4 and drawing 3-3 against St Andrew’s first team. The second team had mixed results, losing 13-5 to St Andrew’s first team but bouncing back with a 13-6 victory over their second team.

The third team secured two wins — 6-3 against St Andrew’s fourth team and 8-7 victory over their third team. The fourth team lost both of their encounters.

At the junior level, the U15B team suffering losses against Graeme Seniors (12-3), St Andrew’s U14B/U15B (8-5), and St Andrew’s fifth team (10-6). The U14A team had a remarkable 23-0 win against Graeme Seniors but fell short against St Andrew’s U14A (10-5).

From February 20-23, the Selborne U15A team competed in the Grey High School U15A Water Polo Tournament, where they secured dominant wins against Reddam Constantia (15-4) and Hudson Park (20-1) before losing to Wynberg (5-4).

In the knockout rounds, Selborne proved their mettle, defeating Grey College (13-5) and St Andrew’s (11-5) in the quarterfinals. A hard-fought semifinal saw them edged out by Wynberg (11-10), but they rallied to beat Bishops (8-7) in the third/fourth place play-off.

Earlier in the month, from February 13-15, Selborne’s first team put on a stellar display at the Vides Water Polo Tournament, hosted at their home pool. They dominated the group stage with wins over St Albans, Reddam Constantia and Paarl Boys’ High.

They continued their strong form with a commanding 9-2 quarterfinal victory over Grey High School. However, they faced a tough St Andrew’s side in the semifinals, losing 7-3. They rebounded with an 8-3 victory over Clifton, securing a well-earned third-place finish.

Liam Hansen, Connor Maree, Thomas Caswell, and Samuel van de Venter were named in the tournament team. Van de Venter was defender of the tournament.
