Stirling High School’s girls’ first cricket team delivered an impressive performance at the Woodridge Festival at the weekend, securing two wins out of three matches in a competitive showcase of schoolgirl cricket.
In a nail-biting opener against Woodridge, Stirling set a target of 101/5, with Cayleigh Wanckel leading the charge with 29 runs. The team then held their nerve in the field, restricting Woodridge to 99/7, with Wanckel also shining with the ball, taking 3/15 to secure a thrilling two-run victory.
Their second match against Framesby was a dominant display, as Stirling posted 86 runs, thanks to Wanckel (37) and Malakhiwe Somhlahlo (20). The bowling attack was ruthless, with Amyoli Mgibi (3/15), Wanckel (3/0), and Annabel Roos (2/14) dismantling Framesby for just 33 runs, sealing a comprehensive 53-run win.
Stirling faced a tough challenge in their final match against Pearson, who set a formidable total of 130/6
Despite a solid batting effort from Wanckel (27) and Laiken James (26), Stirling fell short by 30 runs.
The team’s strong performances throughout the festival highlighted their talent and resilience, setting a solid foundation for the season ahead.
