This week, we chat to Lindokuhle Mavuka about her healthy food business, Abubomi Enterprises, which provides nutritious meal options for her clients.

When did you start your business and what inspired you to start?

I started Abubomi Enterprises in 2021, driven by a passion for cooking and nutrition. I recognised the need for healthy, convenient meal options in my community and decided to create a meal preparation business catering to diverse dietary needs.

Can you tell us more about the types of meals you offer to your clients and how these options cater to different dietary needs?

We offer a variety of meals, including vegan, banting, gluten-free, and low-carb options. Our menu changes seasonally to ensure freshness and flavour.

What skills, experience or qualifications would you say one needs to be able to run a successful meal preparation business?

To run a successful meal preparation business, one needs a love for cooking, knowledge of nutrition and dietary requirements, and excellent time management and organisational abilities.

Do you run the business alone, or do you have a team?

I run the business alone, but my family helps where they can. We work together to ensure seamless operations and excellent customer service.

How has the response been from customers since you launched your business?

The response from customers has been overwhelmingly positive. Our customers appreciate the convenience, taste, and quality of our meals. We’ve received great feedback and referrals, which has helped us grow our customer base.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your business, and how have you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced is logistics. As a small business, deliveries can be a problem. However, we’re working with local transport services to ensure we cater to our customers.

How do you ensure that your meals remain both healthy and delicious?

We ensure our meals remain healthy and delicious by using only fresh, locally sourced ingredients and following strict food safety guidelines. Our mission is to create meals that are both nutritious and flavourful.

What are some of your best-selling meals?

Our best-selling meals are our banting meals with veggies, meat, or fish.

Do you offer meal plans or customised options for specific health goals?

We offer customised meal plans for specific health goals, such as weight loss, muscle gain, or managing chronic health conditions. We carefully consider allergies and work closely with customers to create personalised meal plans.

What are your future plans for your business? Any upcoming expansions or new offerings?

We’re planning to expand our operations to cater to a wider customer base. We’re working on adding more products, exploring new menu options, and partnering with local gyms and wellness centres.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to start a business in the healthy food industry?

My advice for starting a business in the healthy food industry is to stay focused on quality, customer service, and innovation. Build a strong team, and don’t be afraid to adapt to changing customer needs and market trends.

Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about your journey or your brand?

Our business is committed to sustainability and reducing food waste. Our mission is to make healthy meals accessible and affordable to everyone. We provide quality meals, convenience, and also sell precut and peeled veggies, bottled smoothies and freezer smoothie packs.
