After a successful year performing in Spain as a Michael Jackson tribute artist, local dancer and instructor Jayson Jegels is back home and ready to give East London audiences an unforgettable experience.
Before he returns to Spain in April, Jegels will take to the stage for a high-energy tribute concert, celebrating the music and legacy of the King of Pop on Friday April 4 at The Venue.
Jegels spent the last year performing 140 shows in Spain, doing live singing and dancing. As a performer who has dedicated all his time and energy to his craft, this opportunity has proven to be a highlight that Jegels has long aspired towards.
“The experience has been incredible! This opportunity has opened so many doors for me internationally. Captivating audiences across Europe has been both humbling and inspiring, especially coming from a small town like East London.
“As a child, I would lock myself in my parents’ room, watching MJ for hours, trying to perfect his moves. Later in life, I pursued dance professionally, and looking back, I can see how every step of that journey shaped me into the performer I am today,” Jegels said.
The Cambridge High School alumni has been dancing since the age of 12 and has mastered various dance styles over the years. He always knew he had a passion for dancing, but it wasn’t until he took on the role of a tribute artist that he realised he could closely mimic Michael Jackson’s voice as well.
“Dancing has always been my strongest skill, and I’ve always loved singing. But it wasn’t until this role required me to sing that I truly stepped out of my comfort zone.
“That’s when I discovered I could adjust my voice to closely match MJ’s, which was a game-changer for me. Once I’m in costume, I fully step into the role and give everything to the performance,” he said.
Jegels’ fiancée and business partner, Nikita Naidoo, has been a pillar of support throughout his journey. As co-owner of Jayson and Nikita Dance Academy, she not only helped keep their business running in his absence but also encouraged him to take the leap when the opportunity arose.
“When Jayson and I first started dating, he asked me if I was ready. Naturally, I asked, ‘Ready for what?’ His response stuck with me: ‘I don’t know exactly yet, but I know I’m destined for something great.’
“When this incredible opportunity arose, Jayson was a bit hesitant. But I told him he had to take it, this was his breakthrough. The thought of being apart for six months, solo parenting, and running our business on my own was daunting, but it pushed me out of my comfort zone,” Naidoo said.
Jegel’s upcoming show will be a full-scale concert experience, with a setlist including Jackson’s most iconic songs like Thriller, Bad, and Off the Wall. He will be joined by the live band The Alley, along with talented dancers and singers Esona Mona and Mava Gqeba. After his show, he will be heading back to Spain for another season before returning to SA in November.
Tickets are available on Webtickets at R150 per person.
