East London attorney Grant Berndt has committed to running the grueling 56km Two Oceans Marathon this year to raise funds for Hope Schools, a Christian-centered independent school that supports children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Berndt, 56, is a trustee on the school board and has been involved with Hope Schools since its inception 20 years ago.

His fundraising efforts will directly contribute to the school’s ongoing sponsorship programme, which ensures children receive food, transport and, most importantly, a quality education.

“So far, I have run five marathons. I did my first one when I was 50,” Berndt, an attorney at Abdo and Abdo Attorneys, said.

“The Two Oceans Marathon is one that I have always wanted to do.

“I initially planned to participate a few years ago, but Covid-19 got in the way.

“My brother and friends motivated me to do it this year, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to raise funds for a cause so close to my heart.”

The Two Oceans Marathon has been held annually in Cape Town for 55 years.

It is known for its breathtaking but challenging route, which takes runners through some of the most scenic parts of the Mother City.

Berndt’s preparation for the marathon includes running four times a week and longer running sessions over the weekend. His goal is not only to complete the race but also to raise as much funding as possible for Hope Schools.

Hope Schools’ sponsorship programme allows donors to support a child’s education by providing either a full or partial sponsorship. Donors receive regular updates on the child’s progress, including photos and school visits.

The funds raised from Berndt’s run will assist with the school’s operational needs, including transportation, food, and other essential resources.

Hope Schools’ preparatory division headmaster, Nigel Raw, expressed deep gratitude for Berndt’s initiative, highlighting the impact it would have on the school’s future.

“We are deeply grateful to Grant Berndt, one of our dedicated trustees, for leading by example as he serves Hope Schools voluntarily,” Raw said.

“His commitment to running the Two Oceans Marathon to raise funds for our children is a true testament to his generosity and heart for our vision — helping to inspire hope for our children’s future. Thank you, Grant, for making a lasting impact — one step at a time.”

As Hope Schools celebrates its 20th anniversary, Berndt’s marathon effort is a significant and meaningful way to contribute to the institution’s ongoing mission.

The funds raised will help bridge the school’s faith gap for 2025 and ensure that more children have access to the opportunities they deserve.
