Honouring traditions with Selborne vs Queen’s derby

The end of April saw the historic and highly anticipated clash between Selborne College and Queen’s College unfold in Komani.

The annual derby, a highlight on the school sports calendar, delivered its usual mix of thrilling victories and hard-fought defeats across a range of disciplines.

Selborne’s hockey teams enjoyed a successful outing, with the first XI securing a 3-2 victory, and both the third XI (5-2) and U16 teams (A: 2-0, B: 4-0, C: 5-0) dominating their Queen’s College counterparts. The U14A and U14B teams fought to draws, ending 3-3 and 1-1 respectively.

The rugby fixtures proved more challenging for Selborne, though there were still some notable wins. The third XV (22-21), fourth XV (19-12), fifth XV (39-19), sixth XV (19-3), U15B (21-17), U14B (39-19) and U14C (36-5) emerged victorious, while the seventh XV battled to a 7-7 draw.

However, Queen’s College proved strong in the first XV (40-22), second XV (19-12), U16A (38-15), U16B (25-5), U16C (17-12), U15A (21-17), U15C (15-12), U14A (15-7), and U14D (40-10) matches.

Queen’s College’s chess team won 6.5-3.5, Selborne College’s cross country first team and debating teams (seniors and juniors) were victorious, as were the golf and squash teams, both with convincing wins.

Overall, Selborne College won 19, drew 3, and lost 12 of the matches.

The derby once again showcased the spirit of competition and sportsmanship that defines this long-standing rivalry.
