Port Rex Lions Eisteddfod continues

The second week of the annual Port Rex Lions Eisteddfod continued to highlight the wealth of musical talent among pupils in the region, with a focus on the vocal, choral, instrumental and band sections.

The week’s programme featured impressive performances from school choirs, vocal ensembles, and instrumental groups, who took to the stage with confidence and passion.

Participants were adjudicated by a distinguished panel of music professionals: Janna Khweis, a Cape Town-based violinist, violist, and educator of Palestinian-American descent, known for her work in diverse cultural and socioeconomic contexts; Elsabé Richter, an accomplished vocalist who holds an M.Mus. in vocal performance from North-West University and completed a year of master’s study at the Norwegian Academy of Music; and Janel Speelman-van Rooyen, a rising SA soprano, making her mark in the fields of opera, concert, and art song performance.

The week’s high standard of musicality and artistry was reflected in the awards presented to several outstanding schools and ensembles:

Lee Gold senior choir award — Cambridge High School (best high school choir);

El Cantata choir award — Clarendon Primary (best primary school chamber choir);

Musica Viva award — De Novo Serenata, Clarendon (best high school chamber choir);

Jean Fowler memorial award — Clarendon Primary (best senior primary choir);

Elsma award — Clarendon Preparatory (best foundation phase primary choir);
