Genre: Romance, drama
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall is a simple yet emotional film that blends a classic young love story with seasonal transitions.
What truly elevates this film is the undeniable chemistry between the two lead actors.
Jenna Ortega and Percy Hynes White play very different characters, but the way they are able to portray a realistic whirlwind teenage romance is what makes this film such a pleasure to watch.
The movie follows the story of Remi (Ortega) and Barnes (White), who meet by chance and end up spending four life-changing days together, each in a different season.
As their bond deepens through moments of vulnerability, laughter, and self-discovery, the film explores how these short, but impactful days can leave a lasting impact, and how love can grow long after the pair have gone their separate ways.
The main theme of the film is the journey of love and growth between two young people who are still figuring out their individual life journeys.
Remi is focused on getting into college. Her parents are both lawyers and she has planned her Harvard journey since she was a little girl. Barnes on the other hand has no interest in going to college and has no clear plan for his life.
Despite their contrasting personalities, they fall in love and find happiness and contentment in each other.
The film does a good job of showing the consequences that teenagers are faced with when they make impulsive spur of the moment decisions.
It also shows that it doesn’t matter how young you are, love can affect you strongly when you least expect it. The choice to show only four days of an obviously longer relationship is interesting and makes it intriguing to watch.
Even with elements of relatability, the film does lack originality and the plot is predictable. Visually, the movie is well done. Each season is represented beautifully with good lighting, and cinematography, especially the winter scenery shots.
The music also complements the storyline very well. The few montages that show the couple growing closer, or growing apart, have music playing in the background that helps tell the story and make it a little more interesting.
The ending of the movie feels a bit rushed, and it leaves the audience with many questions about what could happen next. Perhaps this was a decision made by the director to allow the audience to draw their own conclusions.
