This week we chat with Colleen Craik about the adorable clothes and accessories she makes for Ken dolls.
What kind of products do you make for dolls?
I make clothes and accessories for Ken dolls.
When and how did you come up with the idea to start this business?
I started my business in November 2023. My best friend, Angela Tuson, was sewing Barbie clothes for Barbie Size Fashion. I used to help her when she had a lot of orders. She likes sewing for Barbie. I liked sewing for Ken. She encouraged me to start my own business sewing for Ken dolls.
Do you have a background in fashion, sewing, or design?
I started sewing clothes for my Barbie doll when I was 10 years old. By the time I was 13 years old, I was sewing my own clothes. I have always sewed a lot.
Do you manage everything on your own, or do you have a team helping you?
I manage everything on my own, but Angela and I work in collaboration. We share ideas, our resources and we help each other wherever we can.
How has the public responded to your Ken outfits since you started?
The public has been very supportive. We get a lot of donations of fabric scraps and trimmings. We have customers all around the country.
What are the top three things you focus on when designing doll outfits?
I try to use natural fabrics and recycled materials. I follow trends, the latest trend is braaibroekies. The most popular outfits always have little accessories like books, bags, shoes and hats, which are all handmade.
What’s your favourite outfit you’ve created, and what inspired it?
It’s really hard to say. Each new outfit becomes my favourite. I have been inspired to make outfits using skateboards, surf boards and guitars. These are beautifully made by It’s a Cut Design Studio.
Have you faced any challenges in your business, and how have you handled them?
The biggest challenge has been when I get a big order for one particular outfit. I find mass production difficult. Angela is supportive and she always offers to help.
What are some of your goals or future plans for your Ken outfits?
We have recently started selling at markets and we have been much encouraged with the sales. We have invested in trestle tables and a gazebo. We plan to regularly attend markets in the future.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own creative business?
Do something that you love and feel passionate about. It is such a joy to do and it doesn’t feel like work.
Is there anything else you’d love our readers to know about you or your business?
Most of our buyers are for children. But I have many adult clients. I have been inspired by their stories of the therapeutic value of healing trauma through collecting and playing with Ken and Barbie dolls.
