GO PEOPLE: Oriya Computers

Oriya Computers founder Jacques van Wyk is a Berea-based technician whose expertise in computer repairs, upgrades and refurbished laptops is invaluable.

From malware removal to desktop repairs, Jacques shares his passion, challenges, and dreams with us.

What type of computer or tech repair services do you offer at Oriya Solutions?

We specialise in laptop and desktop repairs, SSD and RAM upgrades, data recovery, virus and malware removal, software installations, operating system reloads, and the sale of refurbished laptops. We also provide expert advice and tech support for individuals and small businesses.

How and when did you decide to start your computer repairs business?

I launched Oriya Computers after more than 20 years of experience in the IT industry. After leaving a corporate role, it was time to create something of my own that reflects my values of honesty, quality service, and helping people when tech problems feel overwhelming.

What sparked your interest in working with computers and technology?

I’ve always had a natural curiosity for how things work. As a child, I was the one fixing the family computer, and over time that passion turned into a career. I love problem-solving, especially when it means restoring someone’s digital life and seeing the relief on their face.

Do you work alone, or with a team?

At the moment, I run Oriya Computers independently, but I’m building a strong foundation that will allow me to expand and bring on a trusted team in the future.

How has the support been?

The support has been amazing. I’ve had so many customers refer friends and family after experiencing our service. That sort of trust means the world to me. It shows that when you put people first, the business follows.

What are the top three most common problems customers bring to you, and how do you solve them?

Slow computers: I often solve this by upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD) and optimising system performance.

Data loss: Using advanced data recovery tools, I can often retrieve lost documents, photos, and files — even from damaged drives.

Virus infections: I clean out malware, install proper security, and guide customers on how to avoid risky websites and downloads.

What’s your favourite type of repair or service to work on, and why?

Data recovery is my favourite. It’s like digital forensics — bringing back precious memories or important files that people thought were gone forever. That moment of relief when someone sees their photos again never gets old.

What challenges have you faced and overcome?

The uncertainty of starting out solo after leaving a secure job. I focused on building trust, doing good work, and showing up every day for my customers. That consistency helped me grow.

What are your future goals or plans?

I plan to open a dedicated Oriya Computers location, expand the team, and offer eco-conscious tech solutions.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a repairs business?

Don’t just focus on fixing the machine — focus on helping the person. Build relationships, be honest, and never stop learning. Tech changes fast, but people value trust and good service above all.
