Pink Fairy’s Comrades run raises R35k for animals in need

Local legend Mike Webb, affectionately known as the “Pink Fairy,” completed his 25th consecutive Comrades Marathon earlier this month in aid of Qonce SPCA and has successfully managed to raise R35,000 towards the care of Buffalo City’s vulnerable furry friends.

Dressed head to toe in pink wings and fairy gear, Webb crossed the finish line of the 90km ultra-marathon in 10 hours and 36 minutes.

Webb has been running the Comrades for the last 13 years in aid of the Qonce SPCA, given the dwindling financial support the society has received in recent years.

Though he described this year’s race as challenging, his resolve never wavered.

“The mind is a powerful instrument and I was running for a cause bigger than myself.

“My family are all massive animal lovers and we have a lot of rescues from the SPCA, so we know the wonderful work they do and the challenges they face daily. This year it took just two weeks to raise the R35,000.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who donated because these contributions are saving lives.”

The funding arrives at a critical moment for Qonce SPCA, which looks after 148 animals, including dogs, cats, birds, goats, snakes, cattle, and other farm animals. Without government support, they are dependent on Webb’s efforts and donations from generous businesses in the city like Spar and Checkers.

Qonce SPCA general manager Annette Rademeyer praised Webb’s unwavering commitment, saying: “Community fundraisers like Mike’s are incredibly important to us. He started many years ago and has always run the Comrades for our benefit.

“Every run, every step, he’s done it with the animals in mind. We’re deeply grateful. His consistency and compassion are invaluable to the work we do.”

Looking ahead, Webb’s Pink Fairy wings are far from retired, as he begins the ground work soon for his 26th Comrades and 14th in aid of Qonce SPCA.

He said: “As long as I can continue to help and bring joy and sunshine to the children and help animal welfares, I will continue.”

At the heart of his mission is the unwavering support of his wife, Klara lovingly known as “Mrs Pink Fairy”.

“My wife is the most amazing supporter on the planet and beyond.

“Her words of encouragement, seconding, and always knowing what to say are invaluable.

“I would never have been able to do this without her. She is my rock and shield.”
