For parents seeking a trustworthy babysitter over the weekend, Rhonwyn Leendertz offers more than just supervision, she provides care, creativity, and a deep love for children. A qualified educator currently teaching grade 2, Leendertz recently launched her weekend babysitting service to give parents time to rest.
We caught up with her to find out what inspired the initiative and what families can expect when leaving their little ones in her care.
What inspired you to start babysitting over the weekend?
In many cases, weekends are the only opportunities that parents get to have a “time-out,” and that’s what I had in mind when starting this business. I wanted to offer something reliable and nurturing for families.
Why did you choose to specialise in foundation phase education?
I’ve always had a huge love for children from a young age. Playing “school-school” with family children made me realise I wanted to become a teacher and make a difference in children’s lives.
What age groups do you work with?
I currently teach grade 2 pupils, which focuses on children aged seven to nine. However, I enjoy working with any child up to the age of 12.
How do you keep children entertained during a babysitting session?
I use a lot of what I do in the classroom. My approach is very practical, singing, dancing, and learning through fun. Children love it, and it keeps them engaged.
Do you have experience with children who have special needs?
Yes, I’ve had the privilege of teaching in a mainstream school where I worked with pupils who needed to be placed in special schools. I’m also doing my first year of an honours degree in inclusive education, with the hope of working in a special needs school one day.
What do you enjoy most about babysitting?
I love listening to the amazing, imaginative stories children share and watching them exercise their independence in completing tasks. Their creativity and confidence inspire me.
Walk us through a typical babysitting session.
I begin by introducing myself and making the child feel comfortable. We then play their favourite game to warm up. This is followed by some singing and dancing, snack time, reading an age-appropriate book, and finally some free playtime.
Why do you only offer babysitting on weekends?
I’m currently employed full-time as a teacher, so weekends are when I’m available to provide this service.
How do you handle unexpected situations?
Every situation is different, but the most important thing is to stay calm, breathe, assess the situation, and choose the best possible solution.
Parents can book Rhonwyn’s services for R70 per hour, or at a discounted R50 per hour for bookings of three hours or more. Her service is available weekends only, and she welcomes calls or WhatsApp messages at 083-500-4166.
With her warm personality, strong teaching background, and love for children, Rhonwyn Leendertz brings both peace of mind and a playful spirit to every babysitting session.
