What inspired you to start Hayley’s Helping Hand?

I’ve always had a deep love for animals and a passion for helping others. For years, friends and family trusted me to care for their pets, homes, and children while they were away. A few months ago, I realised I could turn this into a trusted service. With my children grown, I finally had the time. It felt like the perfect opportunity.

How long have you been on this path, and how has it been so far?

I’ve been caring for pets and homes for more than 20 years, but officially launched the business two months ago. Word-of-mouth and Facebook have already brought me bookings from people I’ve never met. It’s been rewarding and fulfilling.

How do you ensure the safety and wellbeing of pets?

I always arrange a meet-and-greet, follow feeding schedules, ensure exercise, and give affection. I send photo or video updates to owners, and I stay with pets 24/7 unless I’m at work. They’re never left alone unnecessarily.

Can you share a memorable experience?

One pet shared a quirky habit with me that he usually only does with his family, a sign of real trust. Another memory was spending a rainy day cuddling two American Staffies. The hardest part is saying goodbye after bonding.

Do you have any qualifications?

Not formal ones, but decades of hands-on experience. I’ve also completed a basic first aid course. I’m a mother and grandmother, and over the years I’ve cared for many children at once. Real-life experience is the best teacher.

How do you manage multiple bookings?

I use a diary and confirm bookings on a first-come, first-served basis with a 50% deposit. I only take one client at a time and don’t offer “feed-only” services , pets need round-the-clock care.

Are there pets you won’t look after?

I care for all pets except snakes, my one phobia. I’d also decline if a pet is aggressive and poses a risk because it poses a safety risk to me and to the dog itself. Aggression often requires specialised training, handling techniques, and controlled environments that go beyond the scope of standard pet sitting. For these cases, professional trainers, behaviourists, or facilities equipped to manage aggressive behaviour are better suited to provide necessary care.

How do you handle emergencies?

I stay calm, contact the owner, and call the vet immediately if needed. I always keep emergency contacts handy. The same applies to children; quick action and their well-being come first.
