Local dancers selected for team SA

Lilyfontein School is celebrating a double victory of talent and dedication, as pupil Amyoli Mnqojana and teacher Robyn Mortlock’s dancing achievements have earned them coveted spots in the SA National Street Dance Team for 2025.

As part of the dance crew Fortitude, affiliated with Jo Jackson Dance Company, the two proudly represented East London and the Eastern Cape at three prestigious SA Board of Dance competitions, where Fortitude took two silvers and one gold.

Being selected for the national team is a dream come true for both of them.

For Mortlock, the journey has been deeply rewarding.

“I’ve been dancing since the age of four, and to say I qualified to represent SA with the best people beside me reminds me how far I’ve come and how hard we’ve all worked to get here.”

“The amazing staff at Lilyfontein has shown me incredible support, whether it’s watching our shows or allowing me to leave early for a practice or a competition.

“East London has also given Fortitude countless opportunities to showcase our talents, and for that I am truly thankful.”

Coach Jo Jackson praised Mortlock and Amyoli for their growth.

“They have gone from strength to strength and have become fantastic performers. This is very noticeable while performing.”

Lilyfontein School said: “We are incredibly proud of Amyoli, Miss Mortlock, and the entire Fortitude crew.

“Your hard work, talent, and team spirit are taking you global, and we’ll be cheering you on every step of the way.”

For Amyoli’s mom, Duduzile the achievement is a dream fulfilled. “Seeing my son represent SA internationally feels incredibly amazing, actually like a dream come true.

“As a mom, you wish the best for your child, and I can only say this opportunity is once in a lifetime.

“We thank his coach Jo Jackson and God for his God-given talent.”

She added that Fortitude has shaped his growth as both a dancer and a young man.

“It has built his character as a professional dancer, taught him the essence of teamwork and discipline, and instilled in him hard work and perseverance.”

Looking ahead, she hopes this experience continues to inspire him and others.

“My hope is that he will continue to be a role model to his peers. Dancing can take you anywhere in the world, if you work hard enough.”
