Music reaches across the oceans of time

Using the power of music to uplift and connect across generations, a Clarendon High School for Girls’ Interact society and music department concert brought smiles and a song to the heart for residents of Lynette Elliott Frail Care.

It was inspired by a simple conversation between Bianca Mattis and Roger Elliott.

Clarendon marketing co-ordinator Nicole Sieberhagen said: “Much of our Interact outreach has traditionally focused on children and babies. We felt it was time to extend our reach and connect meaningfully with the older generation.”

During a planning meeting, Elliott noted that the centre had a piano. That casual remark sparked the idea to host an intimate concert for the residents.

Clarendon’s music programme leader, Michelle Wiseman, shared the concept with her pupils, who immediately embraced the opportunity. Every performer volunteered their time and talent with enthusiasm.

“The girls showed remarkable initiative,” Sieberhagen said. “They carefully chose their own songs, arranged the performance order themselves, and even took responsibility of transporting their instruments to the centre.”

Grade 10 pupil Shahaa Harms said: “The atmosphere was so warm and welcoming, and the residents were incredibly sweet. The residents greeted us with genuine interest and kindness; they were engaged and intrigued by everything we shared.

“We learned that music is a universal language. No matter the age gap, it created a bond that words alone could not.”

Sieberhagen said this was the beginning of a partnership with Lynette Elliott Frail Care. Two additional projects are already in the pipeline — a fun activities afternoon with Clarendon pupils sharing an afternoon of games, arts, and crafts with the residents, and a companionship project with pupils volunteering for weekly visits to interested residents.
