One person drew more cheers than most on the much-anticipated Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCM) 10km Race and 5km Fun Run.
Mayor Princess Faku hosted it — and ran it!
Her enthusiasm and determination drew cheers of support — as usual she was lightly trolled on Facebook by armchair intellectuals.
But she garnered 297 likes, 243 hearts, 12 laughs, and 11 awws! and one “what the …”
Among the compliments, one mean-spirited person encouraged her to fall into a pothole.
But there the mayor was, with hundreds of people from throughout the city, embodying the spirit of active, community-driven leadership, BCM reported on its Facebook page.
BCM said that on a bright and breezy Saturday morning in East London as hundreds of residents laced up their running shoes.
The energy was vibrant as athletes, families, athletic clubs, and fitness enthusiasts from across the Metro — all came together “in the spirit of wellness, community, and unity”, the metro’s online writer posted.
Go! watched as a river of life flowed by. Bodies of all shapes, prams with infants on the ride of a lifetime, one woman barking instructions into her cellphone as she pounded along, runners who had finished coming out to greet their loved ones on the last stretch.
It was an unusual expression of a community crossing all lines and divides and finding happiness.
Faku was warmly received when she crossed the finish line alongside fellow participants.
Many expressed their pride and excitement at seeing their leader running shoulder-to-shoulder with them in the name of health and solidarity.
“Today was about more than just running — it was about showing up for one another, celebrating our health, and strengthening the unity that makes Buffalo City strong,” said Faku after the race.
“I’m proud to be part of a community that supports and uplifts each other.
“Events like these remind us that we are stronger together — and healthier too.”
Mayor Faku also commended the event organisers, community volunteers, emergency services, and sponsors whose efforts made the day a success.
She highlighted the importance of such partnerships in creating inclusive, safe, and active public spaces for all residents.
As runners crossed the finish line, medals were handed out to participants, and the atmosphere buzzed with celebration, camaraderie, and accomplishment. The event concluded with a lively prize-giving ceremony honouring top finishers and applauding the collective spirit of everyone who took part.
Faku said beyond the competition, the event achieved its greater goal — promoting active lifestyles, mental and physical well-being, and community cohesion.
“The success of the Fun Run stands as a testament to the metro’s ongoing commitment to building a healthier, happier, and more connected Buffalo City — one step at a time.”
