Straight-A pupil balances many roles

Dezne Hannival, 15, scored straight As in all nine of her grade 9 subjects.

The Hudson Park High pupil credits her success in maths and science to her loving friends.

But it took work, life balance, and determination to get there.

She said: “Honestly, it’s not easy. Half the time I feel like my head is about to explode, but my family has always been there to give me the support I need — which lightens my head.”

“My best friends, Shivaan and Anaishe, constantly uplift me. They’re always there when I’m stumped by a maths question. With them, learning is fun and easier.”

The self-aware and disciplined Hannival said developing and sticking to her own learning style was also critical.

“For me, it’s a combination of visual, reading, writing, and kinesthetic learning. Listening to my favourite music while studying also helps — depending on the song.”

Although she said she naturally excels in her studies, maths used to be a problem.

“Maths was tough, but with the help of a strong study guide, my maths-loving friends, and a fantastic teacher, I’ve grown to understand and even enjoy it.”

Beyond her books, Hannival has a passion for the arts and public speaking where she received a trophy for best public speaker.

Hannival said after taking a short break from performing in grade eight, she rejoined the arts this year — a decision she describes as “the best I’ve ever made.”

At the East London Eisteddfod competition at St Joseph’s College last month, Hannival participated in the poetry and monologue sections.

“There was a lot of procrastination in the beginning, but when I found a piece that spoke to me, I stayed on it and memorising it was easy — I just read it a few times,” she said.

Hannival said her proudest moment came when she recited a poem that earned her a triple gold award.

“I was so nervous, but as soon as I started speaking, the words just flowed. That performance meant so much to me.”

Public speaking, she says, has transformed her confidence. “It taught me that my voice is a weapon — one no one can take that from me.

“I’ve met so many amazing people through it, and it shaped who I am.”

She serves as a class representative, a role she hadn’t expected.

“I was nominated by my classmates.

“I was happy they trusted me with that responsibility. Luckily, it hasn’t interfered with my academics or extracurricular activities.”

When asked how she manages it all, she says: “Balance.”

“Practice makes perfect. The more you do something, the better you become.

“Whether it’s sports, academics, or culture — if you put your heart and effort into it, nothing can stop you from reaching your full potential.

“There are times when I feel drained or overwhelmed. But you must push through.

“Sometimes it helps just to stop, breathe, or take a walk to clear your mind.”

Looking to the future, her main goal is simple yet heartfelt.

“I want to pass matric and finish high school, but I don’t want my life to be just about grades and achievements. I want to make meaningful connections and have unforgettable experiences.”

Her motivational words are as inspiring as her path: “You are destined for greatness — don’t ever take that for granted or forget it.”
