New racing season off to roaring start

The unmistakable roar of engines and the adrenaline-charged buzz of competition returned to the KuGompo City Dirt Oval this past weekend, as the Border Stockcar Association officially launched its 2026 racing season in spectacular fashion.

Motorsport enthusiasts from across the region streamed through the gates from early afternoon, eager to witness the highly anticipated season opener — a combined regional and club round one event that delivered on every front.

Families, loyal fans and first-time spectators gathered along the fences, creating a vibrant, electric atmosphere that built steadily as the day unfolded.

By the time racing got underway at 6pm, the venue was alive with anticipation.

The scent of fuel lingered in the air, engines growled on the starting line, and drivers prepared to put both their machines and skill to the ultimate test on the demanding dirt track. It was a fitting return for a sport that continues to capture the imagination of KuGompo City’s motorsport community.

The evening’s racing did not disappoint. Across multiple categories, drivers pushed the limits in a series of fast-paced, action-packed heats that had spectators on the edge of their seats.

From tight corner battles to powerful straight-line sprints, the season opener showcased both emerging talent and seasoned competitors eager to make their mark early in the year.

In the junior category, young racers set the tone with impressive performances, highlighting the depth of talent coming through the ranks. Carter van der Westhuizen claimed top honours, followed closely by Kole Vosloo, both demonstrating confidence and composure beyond their years.

The V8 class delivered its trademark thunder, with Clinton Green dominating the category and setting an early benchmark for the season ahead.

Meanwhile, the competitive 2.1 division saw Damon du Preez take the win, with William Hunter and Francois Oberholzer rounding out the podium after a series of closely contested races.

The Hotrods category proved to be one of the highlights of the evening, with thrilling wheel-to-wheel action keeping the crowd engaged throughout. Theunis Vosloo emerged victorious, followed by Andre van der Merwe and Gordon van der Walt, capping off a strong performance that would later earn Vosloo even greater recognition.

In the 1660s division, Zaine Knickelbein powered his way to first place, with Ashley Niemand and Jarryd Reabow securing second and third respectively. The Heavy Metals class brought raw power and intensity to the track, with Aubrey Goddard taking top honours ahead of Ulrich Burger and Roy Crouch.

As the dust settled and the final chequered flag waved, one name stood out above the rest. Theunis Vosloo’s commanding performance in the Hotrods category earned him the coveted driver of the day award — a fitting acknowledgement of both skill and consistency on a night filled with standout moments.

Beyond the results, the event marked more than just the start of a new season. It was a celebration of community, passion and the enduring appeal of grassroots motorsport.

With a showcase of both established and emerging talent, the 2026 season opener has set a promising tone for the months ahead.
